It could be even more difficult to push back the deadline this time around now that the Republicans have won control of the House and gained seats in the Senate. Though the transfer of power doesn’t happen until next year, Democrats will have to work with the Republicans to craft a bill. The last time the unemployment benefits were extended it added $34 billion to the annual deficit.
House Democrats are expected to push for an extension this month. Republican leaders did not return requests for comment. For the record: Republicans have never been hesitant about supporting unemployment benefits to those who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. What they have been saying is they want to first identify the means by which continued unemployment benefits can be paid for without raising the deficit.
People forget or fail to realize that most of the unemployed have worked all of their lives and are now in the position of barely keeping what they worked for or have lost it all already. It is not that the majority of the unemployed do not want to work it is that they need to be paid a living wage in order to be able to do so. We’ve been trying to hire for 2 positions and everyone we’ve interviewed - when we’ve called to offer them the job - has said “I don’t want to lose my unemployment benefits so sorry, I can’t accept the position.” What will stop this attitude that it’s ok to collect but not ok to work?

“My American Dream” is the fourth in the series about the problems confronting the United States of America. The other members of the series are “Bashing Sarah Palin”, “America Can Recover” and “A Beautiful America”. These books will make some people smile, some Laugh, some will agree, some will disagree, some might cry and some will think I am crazy. The purpose is to make people think about what is happening in our government.
It doesn’t matter whether you are a Democrat or Republican; make sure that your candidate is looking out for the people of your district. Remember it should be “We the People, By the People and For the People” and if your Representatives do not understand that then don’t vote for them. Your vote really does matter.
It doesn’t matter which side of the isle you vote on. Both sides play these games. Right now our political system is broken and I hope they keep on fighting so that more voting Americans will wake up, get involved and really take a good long look at both candidates no matter what letter is next to their names. Hopefully then we can get a few quality people back in Washington who actually vote what their districts really want. Politics is about open ideas and cooperation anyway. Isn’t it?

I was born in Grundy Center, Iowa on October 21, 1937 and raised in Cedar Falls, Iowa until I enlisted in the United States Air Force. I have served my country for 8 years, 4 months and 6 days and have two honorable discharges to show for it. I am currently raising my 9 year old son as a single parent and living on social security. I have been in the stock brokerage business for about 20 years and an accountant for about years. During the last 10 years I have attempted to help start-up companies to have a method of raising capital. As with all start-up companies some of them made it and the majority of them did not. That is just the nature of the start-up business. Through it all I have kept my sanity and have not lost my ability to think.
