The dark shape had passed, but the growling was louder, more threatening. He heard the outhouse creak and felt himself being lifted off the ground and shaken. Phil swore, struggling to brace himself. He had no idea what was happening as the outhouse was lifted into the air and then slammed down and shattered to pieces around him.
Dazed, hurting and frantic, Phil fought to kick off his trousers and scramble to his feet. He turned his head side to side, trying to see something – anything – in the surrounding darkness. He knew the flashlight was buried and most probably broken somewhere in the wreckage of the privy.
Then he heard a low, rasping snarl and turned to face it. When he saw what stepped out of the night and stood with its mouth partly open – forming a gaping dark hole – and with huge apelike hands that were reaching for him, Phil Crain dropped the rifle to the ground, fell to his knees, and began to scream.
He was still there on his knees, and still screaming when the others reached him.
