“I don’t think we have been properly introduced,” he said in a smooth screen star voice.
Violet’s eyes went immediately to Betsy who was trying to hide her look of shock, both of them wondering why he had left the pretty laughing girl to come talk to her. “Oh, well I’m just here to hold the seat down,” she said. “They didn’t give me a name.”
He studied her curiously then a smile crept onto his face as he registered her jest. He seemed to comprehend it well and was obviously as quick to get her humor as fast as she was to offer it. “Well my name is Griffin, chair girl. I am very pleased to meet you.”
She smiled as she took his hand when it was offered to her. “That’s a unique name, I like it,” she said honestly. “Is it just Griffin? Just the one name on its own without another following it?”
He nodded and smiled again, displaying his perfect set of unusually white teeth. “Yes of course. I will hazard a guess that you have not met any other with my name before, so could you imagine that I would ever have need of a surname?”
“No I don’t suppose so,” she agreed.
He smiled and continued. “I am quite easily identified by just the one title and it does me fine,” he explained as he leant slightly against her desk, blocking Betsy’s view of their now private interaction.
In the brief time since she met him, she realized that he was a good conversationalist and she shouldn’t fault him for his handsomeness. She would just enjoy talking to him and make nothing of it, he was just being friendly, she assured herself.
“Do I detect a slight accent?” she enquired, knowing that he would be able to tell by her expression that he impressed her. “Where are you from?”
He shrugged and adjusted his silky black tie. “Here and there.”
She realized her purse was still in her hands and she put it next to her switchboard, now praying the phone wouldn’t ring. “A one-named man of mysterious origin,” she mused with an intentional tone of a radio drama. “I’m sure everyone who comes across you would peg you as a secret service spy.”
He laughed heartily while not once taking his gaze from her eyes. “Ah, but I suspect, chair girl, that you are not everyone.”
